Begreppet tar sin utgångpunkt i att något är kortlivat; en ökenväxt som gror vid regn, växer upp, sätter frö på mycket kort tid. En flod som endast uppstår en kort tid under regnperioden. Lycka är ofta beskrivet som efemär (rätt eller fel).
En bok, en dagstidning, en runskrift, twitter, sms, chat är alla olika informationsteknologier. Vi använder dem med lätthet på olika sätt. Och det är ganska självklart att vi inte kan analysera den ena kommunikationsformen med samma verktyg som den andra.
Webbsidor är allt mer dynamiska. Det vill säga att data från en eller flera källor hämtas upp ur en databas när användaren besöker sidan och interagerar med den. Data om dig som användare interagera även i allt högre utsträckning med tekniklösningen och påverkar vad som visas. Är det möjligt att påstå att den information som presenteras är efemär?
Jag tycker detta är intressant ur många aspekter inte minst avseende källkritik och uppfattning om vad en källa eller ett dokument är för något. Ett sandslott exempelvis bär mängder av information men vi har liten möjlighet att luta oss mot sandslottet som källa. Vi behöver verktyg att dokumentera källan med, exempelvis en kamera. Fotot som tas utgör ett dokument och en källa.
Jag upplever att detta intimt hänger samman med informationssökning. Det är när informationen och kommunikationen efterfrågas som den skapas. Och när du väl besökt en ”webbaserad informationsartefakt” existerar den inte längre. Då kan inte återvända till den. Den är efemär.
Varför inte bara använda något av orden flyktig, ändlig, obeständig, kortvarig, kortlivad, tillfällig? Jag har lockats av när man inom konsten använder det engelska begreppet Ephemeral Artefacts. Det ligger i konstformens natur att objektet, artefakten skall upplösas inom kort. Det ligger ett värde i att den inte är beständig. Att sandslottet finns idag men inte i morgon. Det i sin tur får mig att tänka på hinduiska och buddhistiska ritualer sk Mandala – komplexa ”målningar” i sand. Här ligger fokus just på att, oavsett hur komplex artefakten är kommer vinden att ta den. Det efemära är centralt.
